Lavender essential oil is known for its relaxing and balancing qualities. However, lavender can have a powerful role in cancer care. Constituents from lavender have demonstrated anti-tumor effects in pancreatic and breast cancer cells (Prowell et al, 1996) and liver tumors (Mills et al, 1995). Some Hospice and Oncology Centers use lavender for pain management and insomnia. One study even showed lavender benefits for fatigue (2004). Overall, lavender essential oil is safe to use on the skin, inhalation or placing 1-2 drops in water or tea. Most lavender on store shelves is Lavandin and can still be labeled as Lavender. This is a different essential oil and should NOT be used in place of lavender. So, know your source for your lavender – the farm, growing and distillation process and handling. Individuals going through cancer diagnosis or cancer treatment should use caution with substances that have additives or solvents which is found in most store brands. Lavender is a wonderful essential oil with many benefits -do your homework on sources and Enjoy!

Holiday Potpourri with Essential Oils
This is a great time of year to share potpourri with special holiday scents.
Recently, our cancer survivor group had a class where everyone brought in something to share
in the potpourri pot! We had dried herbs and spices, dried fruit slices and
flowers, even small pine cones.
Next, we reviewed the essential oils that are special for the holiday season.
We discussed Orange oil and its benefits to calm and uplift the immune system.
In addition, there have been numerous studies related to Orange oil and its effects
against cancer. This oil was definitely going to be part of our recipe.
Cinnamon essential oil was discussed along with its very effective immune stimulating qualities plus it has a warm, comforting fragrance. We all agreed to add a little Frankincense essential oil to the mixture. Frankincense has been widely studied for its
effects against all types of cancer cells. It is known to support the immune system and
be spiritually uplifting.
Many of us remember our mother or grandmother using cloves in the holiday cooking. Clove essential oil has high antioxidant qualities. It also is warming and supports emotional
balance. The last essential oil we included was Nutmeg. Known for supporting the adrenals which can get depleted during stressful times such as the holidays.
Our recipe for a large kettle of potpourri included:
20 drops of Orange essential oil
12 drops of Cinnamon essential oil
4 drops of Frankincense essential oil
6 drops of Clove essential oil
6 drops of Nutmeg essential oil
This made about 10-12 containers.
Add or delete essential oils as you wish for your special mixture.
Use glass containers and decorate with ribbon.
It makes a festive decoration with healthy fragrant benefits.
Enjoy the Season!

Cooking Benefits with Black Pepper Essential Oil
Are you cooking for Thanksgiving? Consider essential oil Black Pepper as part of your “spice” addition.
Last month, Ann Lumbrezer, RN, aromatherapist provided us with this tip. If a recipe calls for pepper, consider a trace or drop of Black Pepper essential oil.
Ann spoke about using a base oil such as one tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil and add 2-3 drops of Black Pepper essential oil (or to taste). This can be used for basting your turkey. You may take a teaspoon of the mixture and add your favorite essential oil such as a drop of rosemary or thyme and sprinkle on veggies or potatoes. The options are endless and fun!
Black Pepper essential oil is known for its support of digestion and circulation. It was used by Indian monks to maintain their stamina and energy. Inflammation is linked as a primary contributor to many chronic conditions including cancer. Black Pepper is known for anti-inflammatory properties (Higley & Higley, 2010). So, cooking with Black Pepper essential oil can have many healthful benefits. Enjoy the possibilities!!
Power of Peppermint
Many of you know that Peppermint is one of my favorite essential oils – I do not leave home without it!!
Peppermint is so versatile. I inhale it to stay alert or to relieve a headache. I have placed a drop and rubbed on my belly for a stomach ache. My friend places a drop on the back of her neck to decrease a hot flash. My colleague uses a drop of Peppermint in a teaspoon of honey and mixes with her favorite tea to relieve sinus congestion.
Did you know that recent research supports the benefits of Peppermint for radiation protection? Studies done with mice found that Peppermint protected them against radiation induced sickness (Baliga & Rao, 2010).
Peppermint is a warm oil and may be sensitive for some skin types. Always dilute in a carrier oil before putting onto the body such as the soles of the feet.
For more information about using Peppermint, check out the reports on my website – www.debrareis.com.
